Inside the Wellness Bubble: Trends That Are Actually Worth It
Wellness
Wellness
Wellness is everywhere, in my Instagram feed, my morning smoothie, my skincare shelf. This wellness bubbles is an industry filled with promises of better sleep, glowing skin, reduced stress, and total life transformation. But as the bubble expands, so does the confusion. I have struggled with figuring out what is good or bad for me. There are so many different sources telling you 10 millions ideas on how to be “healthy”, but what really is healthy? Today I want to take you on a deep dive of everything I think is worth the hype and what is not.
Trend 1: Cold Plunges & Ice Baths
The Claim: Claims to boost recovery from workouts, reduce inflammation, and improve mental clarity
The Reality: Scientifically been shown to reduce muscle soreness, improve mood, and activates part of the nervous system
My Take: Nothing about plunging myself into cold water sounds enjoyable, do I think that it works? Yes, do I think it is worth it? It depends. I like to take two minutes out of my shower each day and just turn it on cool, to help my body wake up. This is a much easier way to get some cold water around you, in comparison to filling a bath tub with ice.
Trend 2: Adaptogens
The Claim: Claims adaptogens reduce stress, balance hormones, and enhance energy
The Reality: There is some evidence that supports their use for mild anxiety
My Take: Personally I have tried the adaptogen called Ashwaganda, and I do not think it did much. I added this adaptogen into my vitamin routine and it did not change my energy levels or stress. I stopped taking it due to the lack of effects for me, but I know many who have tried it and felt significantly better, just know it is not a cure all.
Trend 3: Alkaline Water
Claim: Claims to balance your bodies natural pH levels and boost hydration
Reality: Your body already balances its pH on its own, you do not need anything for that. The hydration levels are the same for normal water and alkaline water.
My Take: This is so not worth it! My cousin claimed that he only wanted Alkaline water instead of normal water because it was much better for you, this is simply not true. Alkaline water is just good marketing for water, making you pay more for the same benefits.
Trend 4: Face Yoga & Gua Sha
Claim: Claims to be a natural face lift, improving circulation within the face, and tension release.
Reality: It can temporarily reduce puffiness within the face but is not a replacement for clinical treatments.
My Take: Sometimes I like to add Gua Sha into my skincare routine for relaxation purposes but I would not expect a face lift from this. I think it could be great right before an event, to give you more confidence but this look does not last.
Trend 5: Dry Brushing
Claim: Claims to exfoliate the skin, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and reduce cellulite
Reality: Dry brushing is great at exfoliating the skin but it won't reduce cellulite.
My Take: I love dry brushing. It is key to keeping the skin soft and exfoliated. I do not think it is a cure all but I like all of the benefits that I have been seeing on my skin.
